When I contemplate the demands on libraries, ALA, and the society in which they operate with the talents and skills of Tamika Barnes, I celebrate her election as President. At no time in recent history has our vital, dynamic 150-year-old association called out for a leader at its helm cognizant of its governance, operations, and core values than today. Tamika Barnes answers that call.
She has served for two decades in top level leadership positions across ALA, including the Council as Georgia’s representative and based on her performance was later elected to that body as an at-large member. She was selected by two prior presidents to be a member of their Advisory Boards.
Most important is the work Tamika has done in the arena of ALA finances. She will come to the presidency as a former member, then chair, of the Executive Boards’ Budget Analysis and Review Committee. Barnes will bring with her knowledge of the fiscal exigency ALA is facing as our association grapples with turning its financial life into one sustainable far into the future. She has indicated her desire to align ALA’s resources with its strategic priorities.
Throughout her career Barnes has used her agency to demonstrate the role of libraries as trusted anchor institutions in our democracy. As a Spectrum Scholar in the first cohort, she is noted for mentoring subsequent scholars. Newcomers are greeted with her warm welcomes, assistance is offered in finding meaningful/challenging positions within ALA. Tamika lets them know they are perceived as incubators for enthusiasm and ideas.
Tamika understands the democratic shift our country is undergoing and the need for emerging majorities as library workers whose faces match the communities they serve. She has expressed her support for cultural competency for all library workers.
In 2026 ALA faces a fragile trajectory. Let Barnes use her insights and experience to ensure that this trajectory is positive.
